Vine Spinach will grow well in a variety of soil conditions but prefers moist fertile soil with plenty of organic matter and humidity. | |
For best flavor keep soil evenly moist. In the warmest areas of the low desert, it may need water every day. |

Malabar Spinach | Vine Spinach | Ceylon Spinach | Basella Alba will grow well in a variety of soil conditions but prefers moist fertile soil with plenty of organic matter and a soil pH of between 6.5 and 6.8. To increase the leaf size grow plants can be grown in part shade. But it much prefers hot, humid, and full sun exposures. Malabar Spinach also needs constant moisture to prevent blossoming, which will turn the leaves bitter. Keep Malabar spinach moist at all times. As container plants dry out even faster than garden soil, potted Malabar spinach requires even more frequent watering. Basella Alba can become densely entangled and unruly. Once it takes off, regular harvesting might not be enough to keep it in shape and additional pruning of leaves and the fleshy stems might be required. Propagated Malabar spinach from vine tip cuttings and stems. Either plant them directly in moist soil and keep them moist or let them root in water first before planting.
