HOW TO GROW LEUCOPHYLLUM FRUTESCENS

Leucophyllum frutescens, also known as Texas sage, is a drought-tolerant evergreen shrub native to Texas and Mexico. Here are some tips on how to grow and care for Leucophyllum frutescens:

  1. Soil: This plant prefers well-drained soil with a pH range of 6.5-8.5. It can tolerate a wide range of soil types, but it’s important to avoid waterlogged soil, as the plant is susceptible to root rot.
  2. Sunlight: It requires full sun exposure for at least 6 hours a day. It can tolerate partial shade, but it may not flower as much.
  3. Water: The leucophyllum plant is drought-tolerant and can survive with minimal watering. Water the plant deeply and infrequently, once or twice a week during hot and dry periods. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot.
  4. Fertilizer: Leucophyllum does not require much fertilizer. You can apply a slow-release fertilizer in the spring to promote growth and flowering.
  5. Pruning: Leucophyllum frutescens require minimal pruning. You can prune the plant in late winter or early spring to shape it or remove dead or damaged branches. Avoid pruning in the summer, as it can interfere with flower production.
  6. Propagation: Leucophyllum frutescens can be propagated from stem cuttings taken in the spring or summer. Make sure the cutting is at least 6 inches long and has a few leaves attached. Dip the cutting in the rooting hormone and plant it in well-drained soil. Keep the soil moist until the cutting roots are.

Overall, Leucophyllum frutescens is an easy-to-grow plant that requires minimal care. With the right conditions, it can thrive in a variety of settings and provide beautiful blooms.

ADDITIONAL CARE

Do not fertilize the plant or add compost to the soil. Leucophyllum Frutescens | Texas Sage | Texas Silverleaf does not need rich soil to thrive and prefers dry but well-draining alkaline soil with infrequent watering. Stop watering the plant during winter. It is a water-conserving plant and only needs occasional watering. This makes the plant ideal for xeriscape gardens and dry soil is ideal for older plants.

Since the Texas Sage | Texas Silverleaf plant lives in the wild in inhospitable soil and punishing heat and cold, the plant does not need fertilizing. If you wish, you can add an organic mulch around the root zone that will gradually release small amounts of nutrients. Avoid high nitrogen sources such as grass clippings. Keep pruning to a minimum once annually, but a good rejuvenation prune every five years will enhance the plant’s appearance.
